Making New Connections

I’m getting ready for a few weeks away from my home office, heading to Maryland to house/dog-sit for a family member. One of the best things about working remotely is the ability to take my job anywhere. I’ll also be bringing my podcast equipment with me so I can continue recording new episodes of Scene Mom Says while I’m on the road.

I love visiting the Washington, DC area— it has so much rich history, as well as Maryland and Virginia. While I’m there, I plan to check out some live music and connect with local indie artists. Since so much of my work is online, traveling often opens up unexpected networking opportunities.

Of course, stepping into a new scene can be scary. Even though I’m an extrovert, I often struggle with impostor syndrome and the fear of coming across as too salesy—or even worrying about being seen as “too old.” Too often, I stay quiet, miss out, and kick myself later.

I will try and remind myself of the progress I’ve made in Massachusetts’ indie music community over the past year. When I first arrived in 2023, I knew no one. But I started networking, attending industry events, and using the podcast as a way to connect with local artists. By playing artists’ music, it led to new connections which led to judging a contest, which led to even more connections. And new friends!  The great thing about the music industry is that a shared love of music brings people together, and most people want to support each other.

If you have something to say, someone you want to talk to, reach out and speak to them. In person, email, social media. You never know unless you talk to someone if you have something they are looking for. It won’t always work out, but unless you make that first move (sounds like dating!) it will never work out.
