I never thought I’d be writing about something that should be so simple, but I see so many posts on social that make me cringe. They don’t provide enough information. They are too long and no one reads the important stuff. You crossposted and “link in bio” is less than helpful when you’re on Facebook.
Simply put, you’re doing a disservice to your brand/business and those you are collaborating with by not providing information that is easy to read, and make finding more information as easy to access as possible. People are mindlessly scrolling their feeds, why wouldn’t you want to make it easy? So, let’s go back to the basics! Here are some key things that you should have written in the copy of almost all of your social media posts (with a few examples from Facebook):
*Who/What: Every post should have a subject. Who or what is this post about?
*Where: Is it a sale? Is it an event? Concert? Podcast? Radio show? Where is it? Can you tag the location? Do it! Have a link? Share it!
*When: Don’t just rely on your awesome flashy graphic that has the information in a most likely difficult to read font- write the date and time (if applicable) in your copy. If you’re posting about a sale or something with an expiration date- post when it ends.
*Why: Why should anyone reading care about what you’re posting? Why should people buy your product? Attend your event? (Or in this case, read your blog post?)
That’s all there is to it! Now, you do need to make adjustments based on the platform where you are posting. The examples here are from Facebook posts, but you can see the basic idea and adjust for each platform you use.
Facebook, LinkedIn, X- links good.
Instagram, TikTok- links bad (hence “link in bio.”)
Never crosspost from one platform to another unless you go back and edit the post so it works for the platform. However since no one really does that, create a separate post for each platform, and post on different days. Many of you know it’s one of my greatest pet-peeves, because it’s so unnecessary.
Now get to posting! Reach out if you have any questions or want to discuss your marketing/promotion plans going into next year!
